Checking your microphone

  • Click on the "Start test" button and wait for the message "Say something" to appear,
  • Pronounce a word,
  • The message "Listen" appears, and you should be able to hear the word you recorded

If the result is not correct, adapt your microphone settings and start the test again. When the result is correct, move on to the next step.

Choosing the speaker

If necessary, select from the drop-down list the speaker profile you want to use that suits you. You can add a spoken language by clicking on the star. You can change the type of licence assigned to your recordings (Wikipedia article)

Choosing the words to be recorded

There are several possibilities:

  • Recording words from an existing list
  • Recording words from a list you create live

Existing lists

They can be of 3 types :

  • Nearby list: this is a list of place names automatically generated from the latitude and longitude that you can enter.
  • Local list: a drop-down menu allows you to select a thematic list already created on Lingua Libre for your recording language
  • Wikimedia category: a drop-down menu allows you to select a list of words belonging to a Wikimedia category

Once you have selected the list, you can remove certain words from it by clicking on the small cross. You can also mix the words in the list by clicking on the corresponding button.

Your own live list

To enter your words, click in the input bar at the bottom of the "List of words to record" box. You can enter words one by one by validating each word with <Enter> or enter all the words at once by separating them with #. This list will not be saved after the recording. If you wish to reuse this list, see "Create your own lists". (Create your own lists)

Recording

When you are ready, click on the red button to start recording. The button will start flashing. You can stop at any time by clicking the button again. Registration will resume from the highlighted word. While the word is being recorded, the sound level of the word is displayed in the rectangle around it. If the recording is correct, the rectangle turns green.

Once the recording of the words is done, the uploading of the sound files is performed. A message at the bottom of the screen indicates the status of this uploading. When the message "All uploads have been successfully completed" is displayed, you can continue.

Warning! When a word is composed of several elements (e.g.: washing machine), if you leave a too long silence between each element, the software will move on to the next word on the list.

Checking your recordings

You can replay each recording by clicking on the "play" button. If the recording is incorrect, you can delete it by clicking on the cross.

Uploading on Wikimedia Commons

Once you have completed your verifications, click on the "Publish to Wikimedia Commons" button at the bottom of the screen. As each file loads, a small wheel will spin next to it. Once the upload is complete, a small green circle with a tick is displayed.

You can check your uploadings by clicking on the "Check your uploadings on Wikimedia Commons" button, which will open a new tab on Wikimedia Commons. This page displays a list of all recordings made with the user account used for your recordings.

NB: if you have accidentally forgotten to delete an incorrectly pronounced word, and have uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons ... don't panic! Just go back to the Record Wizard, record the same word again and re-upload the file on Wikimedia Commons.

You can also continue to record words by clicking on the "Record more words" button.

To return to the homepage of Lingua Libre, click on the Lingua Libre logo at the top of the page.
