Welcome

Welcome to Lingua Libre, Netha Hussain!

Lingua Libre is a project which aims to build a collaborative multilingual audiovisual corpus under free licence in order to expand knowledge about languages and help online language communities to develop.
You can help us!
You can visit this page if you want to learn more about the project.

Before starting

You can create your User page by clicking on it. We recommend that you integrate the babel template onto it. It is very useful to indicate to others the languages you speak, and to facilitate finding other persons speaking your languages. If you are not familiar with wikicode, you can go to this demo User page, read the instructions and copy the prepared babel template, and then paste it onto your user page before adapting it to your information. You can then publish your User page!

Where to start?
  • Follow the steps of the Record Wizard
  • Think of the words you want to record. You may enter them one by one (live list), use an existing category from a Wiktionary or Wikipedia project, or create your own list.
Do you need help?

You can visit this help page where you will find advice for beginning your contributions on Lingua Libre. If you did not find the answer to your question, please ask it in the Chat room.

Good practice
  • Try to avoid background noises during the recording
  • Please listen to the pronunciations before uploading them
  • Consider using an external microphone

Hello Netha,
Nice to see you here and welcome to Lingualibre ! We already worked in parallel on Covid19 projects. I suspect we will meet at the Wikimania. Feel free to ping me for help on Lingualibre. Yug (talk)
Hello Yug! What a pleasure to meet you here! We will be meeting at Wikimania, see you there! On Lingua Libre, I am creating lists of words to make it easy for Malayalam Wikimedians to record pronunciations. A small group of Malayalam Wikimedians are planning to conduct a training related to lexemes, where we will also introduce Lingua Libre. We hope to bring more participation to the lexeme project and enable our community to use Lingua Libre to create a rich corpus of Malayalam pronunciations. --Netha Hussain (talk) 02:46, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for the head up on this Malayalam project.
For solid Wikimedia Commons users with auto-patrol rights your recording ability is unlimited.
First-timers are, on their side, limited to 380 uploads per 72mins due to limitations on Commons (but this can be done in 30mins when Lingualibre is used intensively).
Overall we generally recommend short, regular, 20mins recording sessions or about 200~350 words, it seems to be more enjoyable for our speakers.
You have the 101 summary. Best luck to you. Hugo en résidence (talk) 09:06, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Hello again, Yug! Thank you for the information! We are recording very short, 1.5-2 second audio of individual words from Wiktionary. These recordings would then be added to the corresponding pages on Wiktionary and Wikidata. As of now, there is no plan to record longer videos lasting minutes. I have a question, is there a tool for automatically or semi-automatically adding pronunciations recorded on Lingua Libre to Wiktionary and Wikidata? As an example, once I record the pronunciation of, say 100 words, I should be able to add those audio file automatically to the corresponding pages on Wiktionary and Wikidata? Thanks! --Netha Hussain (talk) 09:50, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Hi again,
On the time issue, I shall rephrase. Users without auto-patrol userrights or higher user-rights on Wikimedia Commons are limited to 380 audio recordings to upload to Commons per 72 mins. But given Lingualibre is very fast, this can be done in 30 mins. So if a recording sessions is more productive that 380 words, the user may have to keep the Lingualibre Step 5 open, and click "retry upload" an hour + later.
On wiktionary and Wikidata, yes, we have User:Lingua Libre Bot (python) which dispatch our audios to 5 supported wikis. See its meta page. We lack Python developers to expand this to more Wiktionaries. Hugo en résidence (talk) 14:47, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Hello again Hugo en résidence! Now I get it, thanks for your patience! Thanks also for introducing to Libre Bot, I will try and use that to make work easier. --Netha Hussain (talk) 04:02, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
On which wiktionary do you wish to implement it ?
Technically, it need to for an existing code such this one for Odia, and localise it to match your wiktionary's articles structures. This therefore require some investigations on your target wiktionary's conventions.
We also have to request the wiktionary's local community its agreement to run the bot there.
The place to gather this discussion is Lingualibre:Bot. On our side, we only have User:Pamputt as our occasional Python volunteer, so delays are quite long unfortunately. Hugo en résidence (talk) 16:57, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
