'''User language''' boxes list the languages a Wikimedia editor is comfortable communicating in, and their proficiency. This improves communication across the diverse community, both directly and by helping find interpreters and translators.

This page provides the framework for displaying the language ability of users on their user page. This helps with communication by listing the languages and the level thereof the user can understand.

Not everyone at the meta speaks the same language. To help with communication Users can categorize themselves into different language categories on their user page. Example language groups are: en for English, de for German, and so on. Additionally, users can specify their level of proficiency in the language.

For example, de-1 refers to a user with basic skills in German, and en-3 refers to a user with advanced skills in English. The two-letter language code is the two-letter code as described in [[Wikipedia:ISO 639|ISO 639]]. (See [[List of Wikipedias]]).

Here is a sample of template usage: see the example of language skill box on the above. If your language has templates already on  Commons, you can copy them to meta. (See [[Commons:Commons:Babel]]).

==How to add your language level to your user page==

*1: Select your language(s) and level, e.g. you speak english fluently (en-3) and basic spanish (es-1)

*2: Add the matching templates <nowiki>{{user en-3}} and {{user es-1}}</nowiki> to the end of your user page.

Your user page is now listed in the [[:Category:user en-3]] and [[:Category:user en]] for english, [[:Category:user es-1]] and [[:Category:user es]] for spanish, all of which are subcategories of [[:Category:Users]].

===Categories and templates===

Here a sample list of categories and templates needed. The order of creation is important:

# Create the main category, (noted 1)

# Create the secondary categories (noted 2-4)

# Create the templates (noted 5-8). Template for 1st language speaker is green. Others are blue.

User language boxes list the languages a Wikimedia editor is comfortable communicating in, and their proficiency. This improves communication across the diverse community, both directly and by helping find interpreters and translators.

Usage

Babel user information
ru-N Русскийродной язык этого участника.
en-5 This user has professional knowledge of English.
fr-1 Cet utilisateur dispose de connaissances de base en français.
Users by language

You can add user information to your user page by inserting code like this:

{{#babel:ru-N|en-5|fr-1}}

This outputs the boxes you see at right. You can add as many languages as you want, in the form language code-proficiency level.

Language code
The extension recognizes standard ISO 639 (1–3) language codes. You can find your language by searching the list of ISO 639-1 codes or a database of ISO 639 1–3 codes.
Proficiency
The proficiency describes how well you can communicate in the language. It's indicated by a single character from the Proficiency column in the table below:
Proficiency Meaning
0 You don't understand the language at all.
1 You can understand written material or simple questions.
2 You can edit simple texts or participate in basic discussions.
3 You can write in this language with some minor errors.
4 You can speak like a native speaker (though it's not your birth language).
5 You have professional proficiency; you understand the nuances of the language well enough to translate advanced documents.
N You are a native speaker of the language and have a thorough grasp of it, including colloquialisms and idioms.

To remove the header and footer, use plain=1 as the first parameter, e.g. {{#babel:plain=1|sv-N|zh-3|de-1}}. This makes it easier to use with other userboxes.
